Scars can be the result of injury or trauma, or
from a surgical procedure. Scar revision is procedure designed to
make scars less visible. There are various types of scars, such
as keloid, hypertrophic, facial scars, and others. There are also
many factors that affect the severity of scarring, including the
size and depth of the wound, the blood supply to the area, the thickness
and color of your skin, and the direction of the scar. For those
that are bothered by the appearance of a scar, this procedure may
offer a solution.
Now no scar can be completely removed, however their appearance
can be improved upon, which allows them to be less obvious. This
can be achieved through the application of certain medications,
or through scar revision surgery.
Various techniques are used for scar revision surgery such as Z-plasty
or W-plasty. Z-plasty is a surgical technique used to reposition
a scar so that it more closely conforms to the natural lines and
creases of the skin, where it will be less noticeable. It can also
relieve the tension caused by contracture.
By consulting with a plastic surgeon, this allows the doctor a chance
to evaluate your scar, explain the various scar revision techniques,
and to explain your options.
